MINI COOPER CLUBMAN S | REVIEW

The biggest MINI to date with zero comprise on FUN!

Larger and wider than before, MINI’s urban transporter has not only grown in size but now comes standard with two full-size doors for rear seat occupants. With more space and its larger dimensions, one might assume that the direction that MINI has decided to go with the new Clubman is unacceptable and takes away from the driving pleasure that MINI’s are known for… well think again! MINI has done a phenomenal job on the Clubman’s redesign and has successfully done so without zero compromises on its behaviour, especially in S trim.

The Clubman S comes equipped with the brand new 2.0-litre, turbocharged and intercooled DOHC 16 valve 4-cylinder direct fuel injection engine, that produces a solid 189 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. Attached to an 8-speed automatic transmission, our tester was able to reach 0-100km/h in a respectable 6.9 seconds.

The central toggle unit enables you to switch through three driving modes that create a new personality for the vehicle: Green, Mid and Sport. The majority of our weekend was spent in either Mid mode and Sport. Finding a few winding roads proved that the Clubman excels tremendously through sharp turns and winding roads. Sport mode causes it to create subtle pops and crackles from the exhaust complementing its agile reflexes that at times made us forget that there were passengers in the back.

In typical MINI fashion, details were on point showcasing the endless combinations that MINI owners could spec out their vehicles reflecting their personal tastes and style. The stunning Chester Indigo Blue seats were by far our favourite aspect of the vehicle’s interior complementing the other quirky but tasteful details that are found throughout the rest of the modern MINI lineup. Space-wise, there is plenty in the MINI’s rear and the iconic split rear doors make loading items simple to do. One complaint that we would have with the interior is the rear visibility from the iconic split rear doors which is not optimal, especially with three full-size adults sitting in the rear seats.

Overall, even though there are other vehicles in its class that would prove to be more affordable and better-suited alternatives, the MINI Clubman S is by far the most unique out of the bunch. It’s agile reflexes and unique premium details are a must for urban and trendy individuals.
